What is Crate Training?
The first couple of month a puppy cannot control his bladder until he has matured, almost like a baby. Placing your pup in a pet crate discourage him from "going" because dogs have a natural, internal instinct to avoid "going" in the dens. Placing your puppy in his dog crate for a certain amount of time forces him to hold it until you take him outside.

Is crate training my puppy a good idea?
If you want the simplest, fastest, and most humane technique for housebreaking your pup then YES, crate training is a great idea. A 48 Dog Crate will serve your pup as a den, because dogs need and instinctively seek for shelter no matter where they are, they need to feel safe and secure, including in your house. This is why it's not uncommon to find your dog under a chair or bed or table.
Is crate training safe?
Yes, in my opinion dog crate training is the best method to housebreak your dog. But be careful, always remove his collar and/or dog tags because there's a chance they might get caught in the metal bars of the 48 dog crate which will put him in risk of strangling himself.
Can you housebreak an older dog?
Yes, crate training at any age can help break bad habits, and bad habits is the #1 cause dogs end up in S.P.C.A. It's never too late to crate train your dog... never! What if my dog doesn't like being inside his crate?
There are 4 elements you need to examine concerning your pet dog crate and why your dog does not want to be in the crate. Location, comfort, time and
security.
Location: You don't want separate your dog from the family. This might make him feel like he's done something wrong or that his being outcast by the pack... your family. So a room with a lot of action might be ideal place for him during the day. At night you can place the dog crate in your room. Being close to you will make feel safe and protected.
Comfort: Nobody enjoys lying down on a plastic/metal sheet and having his back up against the wall. Consider laying some bedding for him and/or maybe some crate bumpers and a mat.

Time: Don't leave your god in the crate for an extreme and unnecessary amount of time. This will quickly turn into a negative experience. After your done training him, remove the door. This way he can enjoy his den anytime. You'll be surprised to see go into his crate on his own when you leave the house.
Security: Think of the pet crate like your home. You don't want to be constantly exposed to the outside world... well nether does your dog. The pet crate is his den. Consider buying a pet crate cover.
Other thing to consider that can make the pet crate more appealing is placing some of his favorite toys inside the crate, feeding him and always having water available in the crate and last but not least always praise him when he's inside the crate.
I strongly recommend you pick up a crate training book in the same time you buy your 48 dog crate for housebreaking and/or behavior problems. Books will cover a lot more than I have here and will help you avoid thing like whining and barking when he's in the crate. You can't go wrong with any of these books and at average price of 7$ the expense is minimal.
